The Edge of Moher and Beyond
If you want to totally immerse yourself in the landscape of the Wild Atlantic Way, join me on a guided walk along part of the Cliffs of Moher Coastal trail. The walk will start at the trailhead at Moher Sports Field and continue to Hags Head and the Cliffs of Moher.
This is no ordinary tour – you will hear how people lived and survived on this Atlantic outpost and gain an understanding of how life has changed for local people from early times until the present day. You will find out how the Cliffs of Moher got its name. You will be shown evidence archaeological remains of fortifications that once protected the homestead occupied by the ancient chiefs who inhabited the area around Hags Head 1000 years ago. You will learn enough geology to understand how the cliffs were formed and how locals have used these stone resources for their livelihood, tourism and industry throughout the ages. You will discover other nuggets, such as the story of visit by a Spanish Armada ship in 1588, a background of the father of Clare Tourism – Landlord Cornelius O’Brien and the development of tourism at the Cliffs of Moher in the mid 19th century
